A leak can happen to anyone with periods, and it's fixable: change your product, cover the stain and rinse it in cold water. In the moment it can feel like a disaster. But the reason is usually simple: the pad was full, it shifted, or your flow got heavier. It's not your fault.
What do I do right now?
Tie a jumper or shirt around your waist: it covers the stain and just looks like part of your outfit. In the toilet, change your pad or tampon and blot the stain with cold water or a wet wipe. If you have spare underwear, change into it.
No pad? Ask a friend, a teacher, the school nurse or a colleague. “My period's started and I don't have a pad” is enough. Until you find one, fold toilet paper into a thick layer and put it in your underwear. It will do for a short while, but don't put paper inside your body.
How do I get blood out?
Cool water only: hot water and heat set blood into fabric. Rinse a fresh stain under the cold tap, rub it with soap or detergent, and repeat. Soak a dried stain in cool water for about 30 minutes.
If a mark is still there, dab on 3% hydrogen peroxide for 1–3 minutes, then rinse well. Test it on a hidden spot first. Keep the item out of the dryer and off the radiator until the stain has gone.
How can I be ready next time?
In your bag, keep a spare pad or tampon, clean underwear and a small plastic bag for anything that gets stained. On heavy days, change a little more often than usual, especially before a journey or a long lesson.
At night, use a night pad: it's longer and wider. Snug underwear keeps it in place. Period underwear or a dark towel underneath gives extra backup on the first few nights.
Common questions
Why do I leak when my pad is nearly clean?
The blood is going where the pad isn't: it has shifted, it's a bit short, or it's off-centre. Try a longer pad with wings, and underwear that fits snugly.
How do I clean a mattress?
Blot the stain with a cloth dampened in cold water, without soaking the mattress. Keep going until the mark lifts, then let it dry without heat. A washable mattress protector will save you next time.
What do I say if someone notices?
A quick “Oops, my period, I'll go and change” is plenty. If you'd rather not mention your period, say you spilled something. You don't owe anyone details.
